Getting the shot even when you don’t have control

Client

The client for this photo assignment was Polaris Industries Military Division. I was to shadow the Video Production Company “Media Loft” of Minneapolis at different locations in Texas.

Issues

Photographing alongside a video Production Company brings on a whole batch of issues and challenges you don’t have when you are the main photographer on the shoot. One of the biggest challenges is you don’t control the how and when a vehicle is moving in the set so you have to be able to look at the set and anticipate where  the machine going to look its best, and be in position to capture it when it is there.

Getting the Shot

In a brochure shoot you can set up lighting. Groom the area and show the rider exactly what position you want them in when you take the shot. Working with the video crew they are more interested in getting longer running time than an instant in a particular spot so you have to work with the producer and camera man to understand what they are going to be doing and then use your skills to find a “magic” moment in their run.
